The Future of Sunni Arabs in Iraq

The situation of the Sunni politicians is particularly difficult since they must rise up to the Sunni constituency’s high expectations. They are expected to satisfy multiple demands, including the withdrawal of Shi‘i militias from Sunni cities, the reconstruction of liberated provinces, changes in counter-terrorism laws, investigations into the fate of abducted individuals and the return of displaced people and refugees to their homes. This is a heavy burden given the country’s ongoing economic challenges and the delicate relationship between the Shi‘i governing majority and the marginalized Sunnis.
